Composite polymers are especially suitable for Freeform injection molding, as FIM parts have material properties identical to those of conventional injection molded parts.

Composite polymers are thermoplastic polymers loaded with fibers or particles, most commonly of glass, carbon, cotton, wood and about 2-4mm long.  

The FIM process addresses long standing challenges in the conventional Composite injection molding process, including:

  • thermal loss of the melt as it fills the cavity

  • pressure loss due to increasing viscosity

  • reduction of molded-in stress

  • limited processing window resulting in non-uniform fiber distribution (loading of fibers at the flow front or the laminar skin)

  • and weld lines in place of meld lines
